Sheyenne Street from south of 13th Avenue W. to north of 19th Avenue W. will close from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, for paving operations of the new southbound lanes, curbs and sidewalk tie-ins in that section of road. This closure is necessary due to the limited space on this stretch of the road for the paving equipment to operate, trucks to haul material and personnel safety. Residents should utilize Veterans Boulevard/Ninth Street E. during the closure to travel north and south.
During the closure, residents with driveway access on the west side of the road north of 19th Avenue W. will be able to utilize the temporary access road in place for the project. The east side of the 17th Avenue W. and Sheyenne Street intersection will reopen immediately following Wednesday’s paving. The 19th Avenue W. intersection will remain open to traffic, but motorists will only be able to turn south on to Sheyenne Street.
In connection with these paving operations, the contractor will begin sawing operations after paving, which may last through the night until early the morning of Thursday, Sept. 20. The sawing allows crews to control the cracking of the pavement and avoid premature failure of the road. The timing is critical and cannot be delayed once paving is completed. This will result in an increase in construction noise that lasts outside of normal construction hours.
This closure is part of the City of West Fargo’s Sheyenne Street reconstruction project that will improve traffic safety and efficiency on a stretch of Sheyenne Street from 13th Avenue W. to 40th Avenue W. This segment of the project from Beaton Drive to 32nd Avenue W. will increase roadway capacity from one lane in each direction to three lanes in each direction. It also includes the installation of traffic signals at major intersections, utility improvements and the addition of a pedestrian underpass at the intersection of Sheyenne Street and 32nd Avenue W. The two-year project began in 2018 and coincides with the North Dakota Department of Transportation’s I-94 interchange reconfiguration project.
Motorists in this area should plan for delays and congestion during morning and evening commutes and adjust their travel plans accordingly. Motorists should also use care while on the Ninth Street W. detour to ensure they travel safely through the semi-residential area. Always use the ‘S’ check when traveling in and around construction areas – check your speed, space and stress.
